Desktop Publishing

What is it?

Desktop Publishing involves combining computer text and graphics to produce professional looking, computer-generated documents for printing, presentations or the Web.

What will I learn?

In addition to learning employability skills you will need to obtain and retain a job in desktop publishing, you will learn to use different desktop publishing software programs as well as other software to create a variety of publication projects, including printed publications, presentations, and electronic publications for the Web. You also will receive instruction in basic HTML, internet tools, file formats, finding information on the internet, and saving text and image files.

Software currently used in the desktop publishing vocational skills training includes word processing and spreadsheet programs Microsoft Word and Excel, Corel Word Perfect and Quattro Pro, and Lotus Word Pro; graphic programs Corel Photo Paint, Photo House and Draw, and Adobe Photoshop; presentation programs Microsoft PowerPoint, Corel Presentation and Lotus Freelance; and page layout programs PageMaker, QuarkXPress, Microsoft Publisher, Printshop Deluxe, Print Master, and Corel Ventura.

What kind of job will I be able to get?

Desktop publishing is a dynamic, fast-growing field that offers many positions, including layout specialist, presentation specialist, graphic designer, publication specialist, desktop operator, electronic prepress technician, electronic publishing specialist, typographer, compositor, and publications designer.

How much will I earn?

Wages vary depending on experience and the location and size of the company or employer. However, nationally, half of all page layout workers earn between $11.45 and $19.80 an hour.
