Center Students, Volunteers Tackle Final Stages of Habitat House Project

More than 100 NTJCC students and staff from all of the trades of the career technical education programs joined with 200 community volunteers for the McKinney Habitat Youth United Build, a project to build a home for a McKinney area family.

The house, which was started this summer, is being built at the center and will be moved to its permanent location. NTJCC students and staff as well as community volunteers worked on the final stages of construction as part of Make a Difference Day, a national community service event that stresses neighbors helping neighbors.

Bryan King, the Career Technical Training manager at NTJCC, said students from carpentry, plumbing, electrical, bricklaying, painting and building and apartment maintenance have all worked on the project, working primarily during the week, while community volunteers worked on the project during the weekends.

As the project nears completion, the top students from each program will be tapped to finish the house, King said.

He noted that students really embraced the Habitat project and the organization's mission to provide affordable housing for families in need. While the students enjoy putting their skills to use, they particularly like the idea of “giving back to those in need,” King said.

Once construction is complete, the house will be moved to its permanent location and finishing work and landscaping will be completed, giving students from other programs on center the opportunity to get involved.

While no moving date has been set, King estimates it will take place the end of January 2008. An official house dedication ceremony, attended by students, staff, community volunteers and officials, and the family receiving the house will take place later in 2008.
