Students and staff at the North Texas Job Corps Center have a new resource to help build self-confidence, leadership and communication skills, and push them beyond their comfort zone to tackle new challenges.
The resource is the center’s ropes courses – the low ropes initiatives and the high ropes course adjacent to the center’s Recreation Center. Additional elements of the ropes course are located in the Recreation Center, enabling students and staff to enjoy the ropes, regardless of the weather.
The CPP program uses the ropes courses to introduce new students to the center. During the first week, CPP students go through the low ropes initiatives, a series of challenges designed to get students to work together as a team, problem solve and improve communication skills. In the process, the students bond with each other and their new home at the North Texas center.
Later during the CPP program, students tackle the high ropes, where they push beyond their comfort zone to climb to various platforms high above the ground, walk across ropes suspended from high towers and use a zip line to descend back to the ground. The course provides plenty of mental and physical challenges for the students, but bolsters their self-confidence as they try new things.
The courses, which were constructed this past summer, also may be used for leadership training, staff training and recreation department programs.
